The Filibuster is
Well, only certain senators . . . like the ones who said they would vote against Alito, but still voted for cloture. What a bunch of f**king idiots!
The complete list will follow, as they will need to be purged from the Democratic party before we can bother worrying about the Republicans!
Seenos please find a silver lining somewhere. It is all too dreadful watching this whole mess unfold. I hope in your cleverness you locate a ray of hope somewhere.
ReplyDeleteSorry but I don't think there is a silver lining on this one.
ReplyDeleteUnless you plan to go into the Back alley abortion business.
I'm buying stock in coat hanger manufacturers. They stand to make a fortune, although not nearly as much as Exon Mobile made last quarter.
WAKE UP AMERICA! Our country is being taken from us.
It's not over 'til it's over. Sometimes losses turn out to be wins in the long run and the American people will not let this country go down. They never have, and they never will. We've had dark days before, and it is darkest just before the dawn.
ReplyDelete1. Abortion was legal in 15 states pre-Roe.
ReplyDelete2. Many states in America have little or no access to abortion because there is very little market for providers.
3. The likely outcome of Roe's demise, were it to happen, is abortion enshrined in law (rather than judicial fiat) in most states with some restriction. Thus instead of the back alley people who want abortions where they can't get them will simply go where they can. It is hardly the catastrophe you esteem it to be.
Surprisingly, I have to say that I agree with anon con on this one (well, one small part of "this one!") Overturning Roe is not the big catastrophe here! It would only be the splash of icewater in the face that would get the public outraged enough to throw out these conservatives in favor of legislators who would make abortion legal. I'm more concerned that this court will be an escape hatch for those who are "raping and pillaging" America's environmental and economic security!
ReplyDeleteI doubt if Roe will be overturned. It's too valuable as a hotbutton issue at election time.
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty obvious that the abortion issue comes up when there is an election, and then nobody gives a damn about it until the next election. It used to be prayer in the school.
I'm with you seenos. Environmental and economic security are our priority concerns.
Alas, there's also the odious "unitary executive" theory presently cited by the Bushies as their excuse for unlawful wiretapping and torturing suspected terrorists. Swingin' Sammy was one of the originators of this crackpot idea back when he was in the Ray Gun administration. Should the issue end-up in front of the Supremes, you know that Alito will let Bush walk.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, Supreme Court Justices have a long and proud tradition of surprising their political patrons by exercising their independence once they're on the bench. I'm not optimistic, but it's possible that Alito won't be nearly the reactionary wingnut that we're expecting. Here's hoping against hope...
